Entrepreneur,
artist, songwriter and producer David Gough is one of
the defining voices in the world of gospel music and entertainment.
To many, Gough is known as the “Mayor of Gospel” because
of his deep commitment to introducing gospel music and entertainment
to mainstream audiences, from starting his own gospel label to
founding the Gospel Music Hall of Fame and Museum to
becoming the first gospel artist to perform at The Festival
of the Arts in Kunming, China.
Gough
is also a frequent guest on national television shows, including
the highly regarded Bobby Jones Gospel show on BET.
Gough, the oldest of three children, was born and raised in Detroit,
Michigan where he was influenced by a wide variety of artists,
from The Temptations, James Brown and Sister Rosetta Tharpe
to James Cleveland, Frank Sinatra and Jackie Wilson.
Gough began to seriously pursue his interest in performing while in
the Navy during the Vietnam War. While serving, Gough and four friends
formed Five Way, a self-contained top-40 band featuring
five members who each represented a different nationality. To this
day, Mr. Gough strongly believes in creating music that features a
diversity of styles and points-of-views.
In the early 70s after completing active duty, Gough moved back to
Detroit to pursue his music career. Gough also married his wife Carolyn,
who inspired him to focus his talent on creating gospel music.
After Gough created and produced his first gospel album, he found that
there was little demand from the labels for gospel music. Gough overcame
this obstacle by launching DoRohn Entertainment in 1978 to
help promote his work and launch the careers of other gospel artists.
DoRohn Entertainment is now celebrating more than twenty years of successfully
introducing gospel music and entertainment to new audiences. Under
Gough’s leadership, the company has been a driving force behind
a diverse range of gospel acts that represent a new form of gospel
music, including The Eastern Michigan Gospel Choir,
a gospel hip-hop choir with a contemporary sound; The Emmanuels,
a quartet with an old-school R&B flavor; Esther Smith,
a traditional gospel singer with a new contemporary feel, and RXG,
the radical X generation – a Gospel rap group, as well as a Michael
Van Tull, the urban American poet. Since its inception, DoRohn
Entertainment has also released five David Gough albums,
including “Heartfixer,” “Masterpiece,” “Picture
This,” “Living Out His Love” and “This
Christmas.”
In
addition, Dorohn Entertainment recently released the DVD
and VHS of “Pay The Price,” a
movie portraying life in college marching bands at predominantly
black universities.
To further demonstrate his commitment to gospel music and entertainment,
Gough founded the Gospel Music Hall of Fame and Museum in 1995,
which is dedicated to the preservation and education of gospel music
and entertainment. Every year, the Gospel Music Hall of Fame and Museum
holds its annual induction ceremony and honors the legends of gospel.
Past honorees include Bobby Jones, The Canton Spirituals and Shirley
Caeser.
Today, Mr. Gough continues to oversee the growth and direction of the
Gospel Music Hall of Fame and Museum as well as DoRohn Entertainment.
In 2003 Gough will be releaseing his new gospel album tiltled "No
Walls", featuring the singles "Good Feelin" and "He
Sends A Blessing".The enhanced CD will also feature Gough
animated using video "Good Feelin" and "Hold
On".
